Storywalk: Exercise for Mind and Body

What if there was a way to encourage your child to read AND be active outside? The St. Joseph County Public Library and the St. Joseph County Parks have teamed up to do just that with StoryWalk®. Pages from a children’s book are displayed alongside a nature trail so that families can read the story while walking through the park. Chosen for their environmental or wildlife themes, the books are accompanied by activities and prompts that promote discussion about the plants and animals families might see in the wild.

Evie Kirkwood, director of the St. Joseph County Parks says: “Parents and grandparents are often looking for activities to do with young children, but can’t juggle an organized program at the park or library. Outdoor experiences like this develop motor skills, build self-esteem, and foster an appreciation of nature, but more importantly are a fun way to spend time together!”

In February, a new StoryWalk® trail will open at Bendix Woods County Parks. Bendix Woods County Park is located on Timothy Road, south of US 20, in New Carlisle. Entrance to the park is free Mondays through Thursdays. A vehicle entrance fee is charged on Fridays through Sundays, and holidays. Library patrons can check out a one-day Discovery Pass at the Main Library for complementary admission to the park.
