Science Alive—in its 27th year—is the St. Joseph County Public Library’s largest event. On February 2, over 40 local and regional science-related organizations will gather at the Main Library, 304 S. Main St., South Bend. Science Alive has become an annual tradition for many families and attracts over 3,000 young scientists-in-training. Free and open to the public, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Leading up to the big day, the Library hosts a series of engaging STEM events. During the two weeks before Science Alive, each SJCPL branch holds a special Countdown to Science Alive program. These fun interactive experiments and activities expand the reach of Science Alive and allow more families to participate. Highlights include:
- 30 Minute Science Experiments, 4:00 p.m. every day from January 21-February 1, 3rd floor of the Main Library.
- Investigate Insects, 4:00 p.m., January 23, Western Branch – curious kids will learn about the role of insects in our ecosystem.
- Breakerspace, 4:00 p.m., January 28, Francis Branch – children over the age of 7 can disassemble gadgets and appliances to see how they work.

Science Alive on February 2 transforms the Main Library into a whirlwind of activity with stage shows, activities, and exhibits. Young audiences will be mesmerized by StormTeam 16’s weather secrets and entertained by Silly Safaris and their animal friends. Science Central will lead families through hands-on experiments and ScienceTellers will present an action-packed adventure using science experiments for special effects. In the Library Annex, 305 S. Michigan St., participants (ages 9 and up) will get the chance to break open old pieces of technology to see how they tick during the Electronics Take-Apart from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
When Science Alive was first created by library staff and board members, it aimed to address the disparity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education in America. The event continues to inspire children to be curious about the world around them and gives local professionals in science-related fields an opportunity to pass on their knowledge.
As part of the fun, children can get a stamp for their Science Alive Passport at activity and exhibit stations throughout the library. Once completed and turned in, passports can be entered to win prizes.
