Food Assistance (SNAP)

SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is available to help individuals and families buy the food they need for good health when their income has been reduced.

“The Saint Augustine Soup Kitchen was founded by Francis Hubbard as his deaconate project in the mid to late 1970’s. He was a member of St. Augustine parish and the soup kitchen has been a parish project since its founding, although the soup kitchen maintains its own funding and governance structure. Francis sought out and was given financial help from the St. Vincent de Paul Society and they have considered the soup kitchen as one of their outreach projects as well.”

“Unity Gardens’ mission is to improve community health: Physically by increasing accessibility of fruits and vegetables as well as providing education on nutrition and food preparation. Socially by providing education, increased social capital, and opportunities for the disadvantaged. Economically: by developing a sustainable local food system, recapturing food waste, creating new jobs, and increasing per-capita productivity.”

When will eligible households receive benefits?
“Eligible households that are not already certified to receive SNAP and will have a monthly gross income of less than $150 AND less than $100 in cash / checking / savings in the month of application, or have monthly housing costs that exceed their gross monthly income and cash/checking/savings for the month of application will receive benefits within seven days from the date of application. Other households will receive notification of determination within thirty days from the date of application.”

Cash Assistance (TANF)

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a program that provides cash assistance and supportive services to assist families with children under age 18.

For help with urgent or immediate needs, call 211.

If you are having trouble paying bills or utilities, buying groceries, finding childcare, dealing with addiction, call 2-1-1 to inquire about short-term help.

Heating and Cooling Assistance, St. Vincent de Paul Society

As of April 29, 2021: St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County is taking applications for Team Cooling. If you have made a payment on your utility bill (even a partial payment), you may qualify for up to $75 in matching funds. Apply online today here.

St. Joseph County Emergency Rental Assistance Program Portal

“St. Joseph County’s Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) is designed to decrease evictions, increase housing stability, and prevent homelessness by helping tenants whose income has been negatively impacted by COVID-19 with rent and utility payments.”

Application Deadline for St. Joseph County ERA Program: Friday, January 14th, 2022.

St. Joseph County and St. Joseph County partner organizations will continue to process emergency rental assistance applications received by January 14, 2022. In addition, St. Joseph County will continue to process re-application/re-certifications for those who have already received St. Joseph County ERA funding.
Renters in need of assistance after January 14th, 2022, may be eligible to use the State of Indiana’s emergency rental assistance program. For more information about Indiana’s program, renters are encouraged to visit IndianaHousingNow.org

Transportation Assistance

The On the Road Lending program helps people get affordable loans for cars. The program has now expanded to Indiana and was publicized Fall 2021 in the South Bend Tribune.
