SJCPL – Open For All: Celebrating Banned Books Week with Diverse Perspectives

September 23, 2024 | By: Communications Staff

At St. Joseph County Public Library, we believe in the freedom to explore ideas—no matter how challenging, controversial, or uncomfortable they may be. That’s why we’re proud to launch our system-wide initiative for Banned Books Week under the theme “SJCPL – Open For All.”

What is “SJCPL – Open For All”?

Banned Books Week is a time to raise awareness about the dangers of censorship and celebrate the right to read. This year, SJCPL is taking a bold approach by showcasing the fact that many perspectives are represented within our collection. Through SJCPL – Open For All, we’re encouraging our community to engage with ideas from multiple angles and to explore topics that might challenge or expand their worldview.

What You’ll Find at Our Branches

From September 23rd to September 28th, all SJCPL branches will feature special book displays presenting materials from a variety of perspectives on key issues. Whether you’re exploring political, social, or historical topics, these displays will give you the chance to see how diverse perspectives are represented within our collection. We invite you to step outside your comfort zone, break free from the echo chambers, and read something you might not typically agree with—it’s your right! Additionally, we’ve curated booklists to ensure that a wide range of perspectives is available for you to explore.

Why Does This Matter?

In a time when censorship and book challenges are increasing, it’s more important than ever to stand up for intellectual freedom. Books should not be removed from shelves simply because they present a different viewpoint. At SJCPL, we believe that everyone has the right to access information and engage with a broad spectrum of ideas. Which is why we proudly adhere to the ALA Bill of Rights. The “SJCPL – Open For All” initiative reflects our library’s mission to be a place where all voices are heard, fostering open-mindedness and thoughtful dialogue.

Standing Up for Intellectual Freedom

As we celebrate Banned Books Week, we’re reminding our community that SJCPL is more than just a place for books—it’s a forum for diverse ideas. By providing access to a wide range of viewpoints, we help ensure that our library remains Open For All. Join us in standing up against censorship and in celebrating the freedom to explore every side of the story.
