Inside the newsletters that captured South Bend’s working life
In a bygone era of South Bend’s industrious past, there was a commonality across manufacturers: the company newsletter. Employee newsletters featured all the updates, photos, and business news that was fit to print. Anything from a requested potluck recipe, retirement announcements, bowling league scores, and war news was laid out in the pages of these booklets. Oftentimes they included safety information and highlights from a particular department or sector of the workforce, so that everyone could get an idea of the combined effort it took to make the organization run. These internal publications offer an inside look into South Bend labor history, straight from the factory floor.
