Coastline Children's Film Festival
This March, SJCPL will host screenings of the films Mary and the Witch’s Flower and Kid Flix as part of the 8th Annual Coastline Children’s Film Festival. The films will be shown in the Main Library’s Colfax Auditorium. The screenings are free and suitable for all ages.
SJCPL will be one of eight venues across southwestern Michigan and northwestern Indiana showcasing films in partnership with Coastline Children’s Film Festival. Over the course of 10 days—from Friday, March 9, to Sunday, March 18—28 features, documentaries, short films, and silent films will be shown.
The mission of the Coastline Children’s Film Festival is simple: give young people the opportunity to experience great films. The films selected are unlike typical summer blockbuster fare. They are often small, independent productions with limited budgets, are made in other countries in different languages, or are significant movies from years past.
About the films:
Mary and the Witch’s Flower
Wednesday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017) is the dazzling story of a young girl who finds a flower that grants magical powers but only for single night. Created by former Studio Ghibli artists, the film captures the magic of Japan’s highly acclaimed animation studio. It was directed by Academy Award nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi (When Marnie Was There) and produced by Academy Award nominee Yoshiaki Nishimura (The Tale of Princess Kaguya). This is the first feature film from Studio Ponoc.
Saturday, March, 17 at 3:00 p.m.
Kid Flix (2017) includes the best short films from the 2017 New York International Children’s Film Festival. From a diverse community that puts aside differences to enjoy a meal (“Stone Soup”) to a relaxing evening gone awry for a hungry young crocodile (“Crocodile”), these international short films will delight all ages.
